Calorie Calculator

Estimate daily maintenance calories using BMR and an activity factor. Understand energy balance, variability, and why the result is an estimate rather than medical advice.

What the maintenance estimate represents

This calorie calculator estimates daily maintenance energy needs using the same two-stage approach as the TDEE calculator: estimate BMR from age, sex, height, and weight, then apply an activity factor. The result is a planning estimate, not an individualized nutrition prescription.

Calories and energy balance

Food provides energy, commonly expressed in kilocalories (kcal). Your body uses energy continuously for basic physiological functions and movement. Over time, energy intake and energy expenditure interact with body weight and composition, but the relationship is not perfectly fixed from day to day.

Method

BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A + sex constant
TDEE ≈ BMR × activity factor
Maintenance estimate = TDEE

Worked example

Suppose a hypothetical adult has an estimated BMR of 1,650 kcal/day and selects an activity factor of 1.55. The maintenance estimate is 1,650 × 1.55 = about 2,558 kcal/day. This does not mean the person must eat exactly 2,558 calories every day.

Why calorie needs vary

Energy needs depend on body size, activity, body composition, age, and many other factors. Day-to-day movement can also change. Two people with identical calculator inputs may have different actual needs.

Safe use

Do not use this calculator to justify starvation diets, extreme restriction, or rapid weight-loss targets. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, dealing with an eating disorder, or managing a medical condition may need individualized guidance rather than a generic calorie estimate.

Limitations

  • The result is derived from predictive equations and activity assumptions.
  • It does not diagnose nutritional status.
  • It is not a substitute for individualized medical or dietetic advice.
  • Maintenance needs can change as weight, activity, and routine change.

Frequently asked questions

What does the calorie result mean?

It is an estimate of daily maintenance energy needs based on BMR and an activity factor.

Is the number exact?

No. It is a predictive estimate.

What is the difference between BMR and maintenance calories?

BMR estimates resting energy expenditure; maintenance calories aim to approximate total daily expenditure.

Can I use the result for weight loss?

It can provide context, but individualized goals should consider health, history, and appropriate professional guidance.

Does exercise change calorie needs?

Yes. Activity is one of the main inputs into TDEE.

Should children use this calorie calculator?

Generic adult calorie calculations are not appropriate for children and teens without proper clinical context.

What about pregnancy?

Pregnancy requires individualized nutritional assessment; do not use this tool as a pregnancy calorie prescription.

Why can actual needs differ from the result?

Equations and activity factors cannot capture every individual physiological and behavioral difference.
